Why does the cat gnaw on the Christmas tree?

My Persian cat apparently loves to gnaw on the fake leaves of the Christmas tree. She's done it to a Halloween decoration as well which was made from the same stuff and other plastic decorative plants. Why does she do this? It not like it has a taste to it and it looks more like she's brushing her teeth the way she gnaws it. We checked for stuff in her mouth so at least she's not eating it. They see it as a moving, irresistible toy.
