When our cats were little we used to anchor the tree to a wall. One used to sleep in the Christmas tree when small and underneath it every year after. He thought we put the tree up just for him.How can you get cats not interested/not able to knock down real Christmas trees?May want to resort to non breakable ornaments for this year. Just till the cats settle down, would hate to lose precious ornaments that aren't replaceable. But spraying them with water when they get near the tree is one idea, also this bitter apple spray you find at pet stores, or lastly you can put hot sauce on the tips and ends of the tree branches near bottom, if they start to bite it they'll think twice really fast and the smell may drive them away.
Good luck and happy holidays. How can you get cats not interested/not able to knock down real Christmas trees?
good luck i have 6 cats and every year its the same they think it is a scratching post and a cat launcher and the balls are fun same with the twinkle lights we stopped using garlen and them ice sickles and we have tried the spray stuff i think my cats like it they are odd good luck and have a merry christmasHow can you get cats not interested/not able to knock down real Christmas trees?I've had cats all my life and in my experience it depends on the cat. Sometimes it's impossible to keep them away from the tree, either real or fake, and sometimes they don't seem to care at all. My 2 current cats like to sleep under our fake tree on the tree skirt, they think it's a quilt left there just for them:) Otherwise, they leave it alone. We do have all the fragile ornaments up high and only unbreakable ones at the bottom. However, one of them pulled the tree down by himself at 6 mos.!
In general, I think most cats are more interested in a real tree because of the smell. Sometimes they seem to enjoy drinking the water from a real tree's stand, but it never seems to bother them. Yours are all fairly young so they may want to play with it and try to climb it. I would move anything fragile up high and put away anything especially valuable. Then just keep an eye on them with it and see what happens. It might work out OK.
Good luck!
you should distract them with toys and atteniton. if that doesnt work, put your glass ornaments on the top of the tree, so they are less likely to be knocked down... thats what i do, anyways. How can you get cats not interested/not able to knock down real Christmas trees?
well, a cat's instinct is to get someplace high so they can see everything. my cats always did that. its just instinct. if u get really tired of it, then put foil down on the ground around the tree about 5 feet from it, all around, so when the cats step on it, itll make a sound, and they dont like it, and wont go near the tree
After trying everything, I found out that if you sprinkle cayenne pepper in the tree, that repels them pretty well. At first they may jump in it, but after they get a taste of the pepper, they'll stay out of it. I did use a lot of pepper, though. And be careful when you're taking the tree down....getting cayenne in your eyes is not fun. lolHow can you get cats not interested/not able to knock down real Christmas trees?
As you probably already noticed, cats HATE oranges/citrus scents.
The first year I got a real Christmas tree, I sprayed lemon scented air freshener all over and around the tree. My cats never got close to the tree. It's an inexpensive solution, and makes the tree smell pretty good.
I doubt a cat can knock a tree down, unless they're tiny. In which case, you should buy a metal tree stand.
And as some side advice, hang your glass ornaments closer to the bottom of the tree, so if they do fall, the chance of breaking is slimmer. The branches closer to the bottom are sturdier too.
