Does the plastic in bottled water pose a risk?

When the issue of San Francisco banning its city employees from using bottled water (allegedly for environmental concerns in making the plastic from petroleum), another newscaster also mused that plastic water can be a health issue from the seepage of the plastic into the water.



Do you view bottled water as a health risk? Has anyone had problems with this?Does the plastic in bottled water pose a risk?Plastic bottles are a problem - globally. They are made from petroleum.



The problem with plastic, is the same as it's biggest selling point - it doesn't break down. Water will not disolve, or weaken plastic.



The thought that plastic byproducts, or polymers are seeping into the water, or any food contained in plastic is highly doubtful - I don't even think it's possible.



The contaminant would have to exist in the water at the time of bottling.



Everyone was alarmed by the melamine contamination in grain products from China, which wound up poisoning thousands of pets. The powdered melamine, a plastic base, was mixed in the grain, possibly intentionally. I say that, because the melamine powder is an unmistakable pink color.



As far as bottled water goes - it's ridiculous. Most bottled water comes straight out of a tap. It's the same water that everyone in that community/city drinks.



The companies that produce bottled water want you to think that tap water is unsafe, so you'll buy their water. Laughable, when it's the same.



So, NO plastic isn't leeching into your bottled water, but it is creating a landfill and trash nighmare.Does the plastic in bottled water pose a risk?

I view that there are too many damn health risk around. Really, think about it. You can find a health risk in ANYTHING.

I would take a deep breath, take a big swig of water from a plastic bottle and settle the helk down.



Now, I can understand a City banning it since plastic is not bio degradable but I won't worry about dying from drinking water from a plastic bottle. Crap, we fill our water pitcher right from our tap. I think Dog Owner is on the right track. Plastic breaks down to PCBs (poly-bicarbonate). It does not disapear. Ever. There are three pounds of PCB's to every pound of algae in our oceans. What seems such a dismissible threat is choking out our environment.Does the plastic in bottled water pose a risk?
Not unless you microwave your water in the bottle to heat it up, I would think.



Pls. don't do that, just use a coffee mug.
